Long Lake #58 First Nation, Ontario – May 2025

May 2025 Long Lake Trip

Our recent spay/neuter campaign in Long Lake 58, Ontario, was a collaborative effort aimed at improving animal welfare in the community through accessible veterinary care. Our team left Barrie with a quick stop in North Bay to pick up a few more team members. Our drive was 11 hours, with sightings of moose and bear, which for some team members was a first.

Over several days, our team of volunteers provided spay and neuter surgeries (138), wellness exams (119), vaccinations, and parasite control to both owned and stray animals. Hosted in partnership with local leadership, the campaign was designed not only to reduce the pet population but also to build trust and offer education on responsible pet ownership in this remote community.

The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive. Kindness was shown at all turns, from the many thanks to the home-baked goods and gifts. Pet owners arrived early each morning, grateful for an opportunity to have their pets seen and treated. Many shared stories of the challenges they face accessing veterinary services due to location and cost.

This campaign fostered important conversations around long-term animal health care and community safety. We left Long Lake 58 proud of the impact made and the opportunity to support such a welcoming and engaged community. For me, I’m hoping to be involved again—there’s something deeply satisfying about helping out. It just feels right.
