Caring Beyond the Clinic: Allandale Staff and The GAAP are Making a Difference Across the Americas

If you've ever met Dr. Lechten, you already know she has a big heart. So big, in fact, that her care for pets doesn't stop at the doors of Allandale Veterinary Hospital. Over the years, Dr. Lechten and many of the Allandale veterinarians, technicians, and assistants have volunteered with The Global Alliance for Animals and People (The GAAP), a nonprofit organization working to improve animal, human, and environmental health in communities with limited access to veterinary care.

But just how far has volunteer work taken them? Well, they have travelled to remote areas of northern Ontario to support essential preventive health campaigns in First Nation communities, providing vaccines, spay /neuter surgeries, and wellness checks for dogs and cats who might otherwise go without care. In fact, last year alone, Allandale volunteers and The GAAP teams helped perform 271 spay / neuter surgeries and 142 wellness checks across two of these communities.

And on other occasions, they've traveled much, much further! In 2019, several team members travelled twice to the island of Roatan (off the coast of Honduras) to stabilize the animal population and provide vaccines and deworming to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease. Since 2008, Allandale volunteers and team members from The GAAP have worked in the Mayan village of Todos Santos, Guatemala. There, the focus isn't only on short-term clinics, but also on long-term impact: helping train a local community member to care for minor injuries and illnesses in dogs and cats year-round.

In a community that previously had no regular health care for animals, this kind of work has been absolutely critical in preventing unnecessary suffering and reducing the spread of preventable diseases. This program continues to grow, helping more animals each year, thanks to the ongoing support and training provided by your Allandale Veterinary Hospital staff and the support of each one of you when you donate to the GAAP or support the in-clinic fundraisers such as bake sales or bath-a-thons.

Despite the diverse geographic locations, all of this work is tied together through the common thread of a concept called One Health - the philosophy that animal health, human health, and the environment are deeply connected. By improving access to veterinary care, supporting disease prevention, and building local knowledge, these efforts help entire communities, not just individual dogs and cats.
