I Remember

I remember over fifteen years ago, you were a tiny little puppy four weeks old, that fit in the palm of my hand...
I remember that you rarely ever ate your dog food, but devoured Kleenex, shoes and my favorite grey sweat-top...
I remember that you ran like a bullet, and would jump forever after a ratty old tennis ball...
I remember in the evenings we would take walks with your "boyfriend" Bear, while my buddy and I contemplated life and women...
I remember that we lived in five different cities, and never once did you sit in the back seat...
I remember that you were there through the good times, bad times and the breakups, winking in acknowedgement every time I told a story or asked your opinion...
I remember when my wife came into our little family, and how easily she won your heart with table scraps and chew toys...
I remember that you gave "kisses", then rewarded yourself by gorging on the dog treats hidden in the closet...
I remember that you swam like a furry fish and would wallow in every puddle possible during rainy walk days...
I remember that you instigated anygry barking fits at two o'clock in the morning, protecting us from the wind blowing around the house...
I remember that you greeted me every day at the door for fifteen years with a happy face and a smile...
I remember how angry I became when you made messes in the house because you were sick and couldn't tell us...
I remember how impatient I became during our walks, because you were getting old and tired...
I remember that I have never wept so strong or ferociously as the day you died in the vet's office...
I remember the overwhelming guilt that haunts me every day for making the decision to put down my best friend...
I remember that you loved me unconditionally...
And when it's my time and Jesus comes to take me home, I pray that you will be by His side, so that we can take one final walk together.
